Becoming a full time artist
May 1st 2017, marks the day I finally move from part time to full time artist. Definitely a long time coming, however now that I am here, looking forward to the challenge ahead. The goal is to paint six large paintings a year, effectively one every eight weeks, should be interesting...
I certainly have a long list of projects or subject matter that would be wonderful to capture on the canvas, now it just comes down to the discipline of churning them out and being super productive. I heard this week of a fantastic way to increase your productivity. Go and buy a cheap timer that counts down (as used in cooking). Set it to 48 minutes and start the timer. During that time, simply focus on your task at hand, so that means, don't answer the phone, no emailing, tweeting, or spending time on Facebook. Once the timer goes off set it to 12 minutes, and at that point use the bathroom, grab a brew, or something to snack on and only then catch up on your messages, give it a try!
So to mark the occasion my first painting is that of a train in Otago, a very special train... At the moment half way through the drawing, there is lot happening in the composition and just because I love challenging myself, my reference image is working from a very low resolution ( and very old camera of mine ) .... absolute nightmare, note to self, must upgrade to a better camera shortly, Lol, but I digress. I actually started on the drawing in April and hope to have finished mid May by which time I will well and truly be eager to start painting!
