Renoir My Father Biography
Luckily I came across this magnificent book in recent times with Jean Renoir recounting his discussions with Auguste Renior, his father and one of the main instigators of the Impressionists movement.
An amazing detail of France and Paris during Renoirs lifetime is revealed along with his biography as a painter. Sometimes funny, other times illuminating and sad. All artists should consider reading this book. What sets this book apart from normal art biographies is that this not a story simply retold by some third party person, regardless how well researched or well intentioned. No, what makes this special and unique is that in effect we hearing the words direct from the artists mouth via his son Jean, a very well respected film director.
It is this skill as a director which helps weave the narration through the streets of Paris and through Reniors long life as he tackles his life and artistic goals.
"Truly a liberating book, best read at a uncture where bravery and integrity are called for, or at a moment of creative crisis... [Jean Renoir] writes a portrait of his father's still core that descibes something deeper about art and artists, no matter their medium."
